Lisp is a family of programming languages with a long history and a distinctive, fully parenthesized prefix notation. It was originally specified in 1960 and is the second-oldest high-level programming language still in common use today. The founder, John McCarthy, based Lisp on Alonzo Church’s lambda calculus and was originally created for practical mathematical notation. Lisp pioneered tree data structures, automatic storage management, dynamic typing, and the selfhosting compiler. If you want to learn more about the history of Lisp, you can read “History of Lisp” by Professor John McCarthy. In this paper, he presents the history of LISP according to his memory in 1978 at the ACM SIGPLAN History of Programming Languages Conference. He concentrates on the development of the basic ideas of LISP and distinguishes two periods - Summer 1956 through Summer 1958 when most of the key ideas were developed (some of which were implemented in the FORTRAN based FLPL), and Fall 1958 through 1962 when the programming language was implemented and applied to problems of artificial intelligence.
